24th December 2018 Hiking - Walking: Jubilee Wood and Crosby Beach, Liverpool Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered: Monday 24th December - walks ***** – Jubilee Wood and Crosby Beach, Liverpool - sunny. We traveled up to Bootle near Liverpool yesterday to spend Christmas with family and friends, making a small detour through the Peak District to avoid the M6. Despite the poor weather we saw enough to want to come and explore more! The rain had cleared this morning and we had lovely day with lots of sunshine. After breakfast, and with Grandson Arlo off to visit relatives with his other Grandparents, Mag and I, along with our son Rob, his partner Hannah and her mum went for an hour’s walk. We were soon out into open fields and on to Jubilee woods, returning to check out the Leeds and Liverpool canal where you can bike into the city centre about 10 miles away. Back to the house for cheese and biscuits. Then in the late afternoon everyone drove in two cars to visit Crosby beach, famous for 100 life size metal sculptures of men who were actually modeled on the artist, Antony Gormley’s own body. They were planted in the beach in 1997 at the cost of £197,000 and are amazing - especially now they are covered in algae and corroded from the constant contact with salt water. Arriving at the car park at 3 it was a short walk to the wide sandy beach. The tide was low and the eerie figures stood as far as the eye could see, left towards Liverpool docks and right to the more remote end leading all the way to Blackpool! We timed it just right and with the sun dropping over the sea it was a photographer’s dream. Despite the cold it was busy with people having a pre-Christmas walk, watched over by a RNLI 4x4 patrolling the beach! I set up the tripod for a group shot by the first statue we came to and then we continued towards Liverpool. Grandson Arlo, in his wellies and well wrapped up against the cold, was loving splashing about in the sandy mud. It is the perfect beach for kids, all year round:) While the others walked back along the tide line, I headed to the water’s edge to take some pics of a jetty and the sculptures until my hands got too cold. I returned to meet up with Mag, Rob, Hannah and Arlo - still having fun on the beach, while the others returned home to warm up and make some delicious hot chocolate with all the trimmings which was the perfect welcome back!! :) Photo Gallery Here Gormley Sculptures,Crosby here |
